Scabies Treatment
Scabies treated for the entire family with topical permethrin, oral ivermectin and a strict laundry decontamination plan to prevent reinfection.
What is Scabies Treatment?
Scabies is caused by the Sarcoptes scabiei mite burrowing into the skin. The hallmark is intense night-time itch, often with tiny burrows and red bumps in characteristic sites — between fingers, wrists, armpits, waistline, around the navel, and genitals. Children may also have involvement of the palms, soles and scalp.
The most important rule of scabies treatment is that the entire household and close contacts must be treated simultaneously, even those without symptoms — otherwise reinfection is almost guaranteed. This is the single most common reason scabies treatment fails.
At Orange Skin Clinic, Tirunelveli, we confirm scabies clinically (and with dermoscopy when needed — burrows and the mite are visible under magnification) and prescribe a structured plan. The standard regimen is 5% permethrin cream applied from neck to toes (head and scalp included for children), left on for 8–14 hours, washed off, and repeated after 7 days to catch newly hatched mites. Oral ivermectin is added for severe, crusted (Norwegian) or institutional scabies, and is increasingly used as first-line in adults due to its convenience.
Equally critical is decontamination: all clothing, bed linen, towels and undergarments worn in the past 3 days must be hot-washed and ironed, or sealed in a plastic bag for 7 days (the mite cannot survive away from the body that long). Mattresses and sofas can be vacuumed.
The itch can persist for 2–4 weeks even after successful treatment — this is an immune reaction to dead mite particles, not treatment failure. We provide antihistamines and short topical steroid courses for symptomatic relief.
If you have intense night-time itching, especially with family members affected, search for scabies treatment in Tirunelveli and book a same-week consultation.
